Comercio y cosecha de peyote, 1986 a 2016
Texas es el único lugar del mundo con una cosecha comercial de peyote bajo licencia, y su Departamento de Seguridad Pública publicó los totales anuales de los distribuidores durante treinta y un años. Los distribuidores con licencia declararon 1.913.212 botones vendidos en 1986, un máximo de 2.317.380 en 1997 y 867.674 en 2016, el último año en que el estado exigió las cifras. En ese mismo periodo, el precio medio por cada mil botones subió de 78 a 378 dólares. En rarecactus.com reunimos en un solo conjunto de datos todas las cifras publicadas por el DPS de Texas sobre los distribuidores de peyote de 1986 a 2016 y las pusimos junto al estudio de rebrote del Cactus Conservation Institute, porque las dos series se explican entre sí y nunca se habían representado juntas. Cada gráfico tiene su tabla debajo, y cada cifra remite a una página o un artículo citados.
¿Cuántos botones de peyote declaró vender Texas entre 1986 y 2016?
Entre unos 0,9 y 2,3 millones de botones al año, con un recuento que cayó a menos de la mitad entre el máximo de 1997 y 2016. Los cuatro gráficos siguen los botones vendidos, las ventas declaradas en dólares, el precio medio por cada mil botones y el número de distribuidores con licencia. Botones y dólares se mueven en sentidos opuestos a partir de finales de la década de 1990: salían menos plantas del suelo mientras el comercio ganaba más por ellas, que es como se ve desde dentro una oferta silvestre que se reduce. Las líneas discontinuas marcan las enmiendas de 1994 a la American Indian Religious Freedom Act, que llevaron la exención de la Native American Church a la ley federal, y el cambio de norma de 2016 que puso fin a los informes.

El número de distribuidores solo existe para los años en que una fuente lo indica: nueve en 1988, cuatro de 2003 a 2005 y tres desde 2006. Nadie ha publicado un recuento para 1989 a 2002, y esas celdas quedan vacías en lugar de rellenarse con una estimación.
¿Por qué dejó Texas de publicar datos sobre la cosecha de peyote en 2016?
Un cambio de norma del DPS entró en vigor el 6 de noviembre de 2016 y suprimió la obligación de que los distribuidores con licencia declararan ventas e ingresos, así que la serie pública termina ese año. La norma es la sección 13.36 del título 37 del Texas Administrative Code, adoptada en 41 TexReg 8620. Los distribuidores siguen teniendo licencias estatales y registro federal ante la DEA, y el estado sigue registrando quién tiene licencia, pero ya no se recogen los totales anuales de botones y dólares que permitían medir el descenso. La fila de 2016 es por tanto el recuento de botones más bajo de la serie y el último que se verá, salvo que la norma vuelva a cambiar. ¿Cuánto rebrota el peyote silvestre después de cosecharlo?
Una sola cosecha bien hecha deja con vida a unas nueve de cada diez plantas al cabo de dos años, pero las que sobreviven son mucho más pequeñas y, si se cosechan de nuevo en un ciclo de dos años, encogen con cada corte. El Cactus Conservation Institute marcó plantas en el sur de Texas en 2008 y las siguió durante seis años. Dos años después de una cosecha, el 90 por ciento de las plantas cosechadas seguía viva, frente al 98 por ciento de los controles, y su volumen aéreo seguía un 80 por ciento por debajo del que tenían. Las plantas cosechadas cada dos años perdieron un 44 por ciento de la masa de corona cosechable entre el primer y el segundo corte, y otro 32 por ciento entre el segundo y el tercero. En el intervalo de 2012 a 2014 sobrevivió el 77 por ciento de las plantas cosechadas repetidamente, frente al 98 por ciento de los controles. Las coronas rebrotadas también contienen menos del alcaloide que valora el comercio: 2,01 gramos de mescalina por cada 100 gramos de tejido seco en coronas pequeñas de rebrote, frente a 3,8 en las maduras sin cosechar, un descenso del 47 por ciento.

¿Cuántos distribuidores de peyote con licencia quedan en Texas?
Tres en cada año de 2006 a 2015, frente a nueve en 1988 y unos veintisiete a mediados de la década de 1970.
