What arrives in a Mammillaria order

At rarecactus.com every Mammillaria we sell is seed grown and never grafted. Most were sown in our greenhouse in Orange County, California; the two crested Mammillaria herrerae came to us from Japan as seed grown plants and have grown on here since, as their listings say.

Sizes run from a 2 cm Mammillaria luethyi on its carrot-like taproot to herrerae crests about 4 inches across, and each listing states its own measurement.

One-of-a-kind listings show the exact plant. The luethyi is a batch with documented field data, MZ 1753 from Ciudad Acuña in Coahuila, and shows a representative plant.

Plants ship well rooted and packed dry. Pot on arrival into a small, fast-draining pot of mineral mix and withhold water for about 14 days before the first soak.

How we grow and ship Mammillaria

Four to six hours of direct sun keeps the spines dense and the spring flower ring reliable. We water only once the mix is completely dry, spring to autumn, aiming at the soil rather than the crown, and keep the plants dry through a cool winter. The Mammillaria care guide covers the mix and the winter minimum species by species, and the Mammillaria encyclopedia hub has the same figures in a panel above its plant list.

A Mammillaria ships in its dry mix, the pot taped and the plant braced so the spine net is not crushed in transit. We ship within the United States only, for a flat $12, and orders go out within 1 to 3 business days. Sales are final; should a plant arrive dead, send your order number and clear photos of the plant and the packaging within a couple of days of delivery and we will work toward a fair resolution.

Which Mammillaria we stock

Mammillaria crucigera is a slow, short-cylindrical species from the Tehuacán valley, offered as a mature single-headed plant. Mammillaria herrerae, the golf ball cactus, is here as two crested specimens whose white spination has fanned into a brain-like ridge. Mammillaria luethyi is the button-sized Coahuilan species that was known only from photographs for 44 years, sold as young plants with field data.

Sold plants, including Mammillaria humboldtii, stay listed.

CITES and permits

Mammillaria sits on CITES Appendix II through the family-wide listing of the Cactaceae, and Mammillaria herrerae is also protected in Mexico under NOM-059. CITES governs international trade only, so nursery-propagated plants shipped within the United States need no permit.

Mammillaria buying questions

Is a Mammillaria from rarecactus.com rooted when it arrives?

Yes, every plant ships with the root system it grew, packed dry. Pot it up, wait about two weeks, then water.

What does cristata mean on a Mammillaria listing?

A cristate or crested plant has a growing point that has spread into a line instead of a dot, so the body grows as a fan or ridge. It is a growth form, not a species, and the care is the same as for the normal plant; the crests we sell are seed grown, not grafted.

When will my Mammillaria flower?

The common species flower within two to three years of sowing, and the ones we stock are slower: Mammillaria herrerae needs at least five years from seed, Mammillaria crucigera grows in millimetres a year, and Mammillaria luethyi takes many years to reach flowering size. All of them carry a ring of small flowers around the crown in spring, set by a cool, dry winter rest.

Why does a 2 cm Mammillaria luethyi cost what it does?

A 2 cm luethyi carries documented field data and years of growing on a taproot, for a species that was known only from photographs for 44 years and is mostly sold grafted elsewhere.

Do I need a permit to buy Mammillaria in the US?

No permit is needed within the United States. Appendix II applies to international shipments, and our nursery-propagated plants travel domestically with no CITES paperwork.
